Graded Syllabus Classes
The Graded Syllabus Classes follow the Royal Academy of Dance syllabi and are open to everyone. There is a clear progression through the grades and students are encouraged to take examinations to give them a sense of achievement when they have reached the required standard. Pointe work is not a required element of the Graded Examinations, but students may be invited to take part in separate Pointe Classes.
Vocational Syllabus Classes
(Intermediate Foundation Ballet & Intermediate Ballet)
These classes follow the Royal Academy of Dance syllabi and are intended to run alongside the Grade classes for dancers who are more able. Attendance at these classes is by invitation only and students may be required to attend one or more trial classes. Pointe work is a required element of the Vocational Examinations.
Our new Booster Classes are designed to complement our existing syllabus classes. The focus is on strengthening and stretching exercises; developing musicality and artistry through unset work and repertoire; and tackling particular skills required for syllabus classes, such as pirouettes and leaps.
Pointe Work is only examined as part of the Vocational Examinations, but students may participate in our Pointe Classes by invitation. It is important that students do not undertake pointe work before they have obtained the necessary strength as this can give rise to injuries and we would typically recommend that students do not commence pointe work until they are in Grade 5 or 6. However, as students’ strength develops at different rates, it may be that students in the same class start pointe work at different times.
ISTD Modern is a technical and theatrical form of dance. This rhythmic dance style is often seen on the stages of musical productions, encouraging freedom of expression giving students the opportunity to be creative with choreography. The ISTD Modern syllabus is based around a warm-up, floor work, a rhythmical section progressing into travelling steps and amalgamations. ISTD Modern Examinations start at Primary level (ages 4 1/2 years old) running through to Vocational levels.
ISTD Tap classes encourage students to have fun exploring different intricate rhythms whilst developing excellent coordination and learning a wide vocabulary of steps. As they progress, students develop their style with more emphasis on speed of footwork, syncopation, improvisation and stage presence. The Tap work has been re-developed bringing the syllabus up to date keeping it fun, exciting and challenging. ISTD Tap Examinations start at Primary (ages 5 years old) running through to Vocational levels. We also offer an adult tap class at Dance First too!
ISTD Jazz, set to the latest chart music, is an expressive and dynamic form of dance, encouraging students to move freely with speed, energy and attack. Exercises and combinations incorporate many strong, isolated movements including kicks, leaps and turns. The classes follow the ISTD Jazz Awards syllabus. Each award consists of a warm-up, combination steps, set amalgamations and choreographed routines. ISTD Jazz Examinations run at levels Bronze, Silver and Gold. We also offer a Gold Jazz + class at Dance First which challenges those beyond the syllabus work into more technical and advanced choreography whilst continuing to work on flexability and strength.
